01

How the enable loans calculator works out your payment

The calculator uses the standard amortization formula for a fixed-rate personal loan. It finds the one level payment that covers each period's interest and pays the balance down to zero by the final payment.

In words, the steps run like this. First, the APR you enter is divided by the number of payments in a year to get a periodic rate: 21.49% divided by 12 for monthly payments, or by 26 for every two weeks. Next, the calculator works out how much one dollar grows at that periodic rate over the full number of payments. The payment is the amount that, repeated every period, exactly balances the personal loan amount plus that growth.

Each payment is then split in two. The interest portion equals the periodic rate times whatever balance is still owed; the rest goes to principal. Because the balance is highest at the start, early payments are mostly interest, and later ones are mostly principal. Multiply the payment by the number of payments to get the total repaid, and subtract the amount borrowed to see the interest. Personal loans from lenders in our network typically follow this same schedule, which is why the estimate usually lands close to a real offer with the same APR and term.

People researching enable loans often skip this part, but it explains a useful pattern: halving the term does not double the payment, because a shorter schedule also cuts the interest that builds up along the way.

02

APR vs interest rate: which number to type in

Enter the APR whenever you have it. The interest rate covers only the charge on principal, while APR folds in required fees such as an origination fee, so it reflects the full yearly cost of a personal loan.

The field starts at 21.49%, the example APR used throughout this site, which sits inside the typical range of about 6% to 35.99%. Your real personal loan APR is set by the lender and depends on your credit, income, state and chosen term, so try the low and high ends to see the spread.

An origination fee changes the picture in a second way: it is usually subtracted from the deposit. A $3,000 personal loan with a 5% fee would put about $2,850 in your account while you repay the full $3,000. The personal loan glossary defines APR, origination fee and amortization in more detail, and the guide to typical APR ranges shows what pushes an offer up or down.

Worked examples at the 21.49% example APR

The table below shows estimated monthly personal loan figures for every amount in the range at 21.49% APR. The amounts and payments are illustrations only; an offer from a lender may carry a different APR, term or fee.

Estimated monthly payments at 21.49% APR (estimates, not offers)
AmountTermMonthly paymentTotal repaidInterest
$5006 months$88.63$531.78$31.78
$1,00012 months$93.35$1,120.20$120.20
$1,50012 months$140.02$1,680.24$180.24
$2,00012 months$186.70$2,240.40$240.40
$3,00024 months$154.88$3,717.12$717.12
$5,00036 months$189.64$6,827.04$1,827.04

The representative example. Borrowing $2,000 for 12 months at 21.49% APR comes to about $186.70 a month, about $2,240.40 in total and about $240.40 in interest. Stretch the same $2,000 to 24 months and the estimated payment drops to $103.25, but interest roughly doubles to $478.00.

Term length at the top of the range. A $5,000 personal loan over 24 months is estimated at $258.13 a month with $1,195.12 in interest. Over 48 months the payment falls to $156.15, yet interest climbs to $2,495.20. The extra two years save about $102 a month and cost about $1,300 more overall.

Small amounts, short terms. $500 repaid over 3 months is about $172.67 a month with just $18.01 in interest; over 9 months it is $60.65 a month and $45.85 in interest. On a small personal loan, the dollar gap between terms is modest, so the monthly payment that fits your budget can reasonably decide it. Comparing enable loans offers this way, payment against total cost, keeps a low monthly figure from hiding a higher price.

Explore each loan amount in detail

Every personal loan amount from $500 to $5,000 has its own page with three term options, typical uses and estimated payments at the example APR. Open the one closest to your plan after running the calculator.

Enable loans reviews from borrowers often mention that seeing the payment for their exact amount first made it easier to judge an offer. The frequently asked questions page covers what happens once you are ready to send a request.

05

Monthly vs biweekly payment frequency

Switching the frequency to biweekly splits the yearly cost into 26 smaller payments instead of 12. Most personal loan lenders bill monthly, so use the biweekly view mainly to see how a payment lines up with your paycheck.

Biweekly figures are roughly, not exactly, half the monthly payment, because interest is charged on a balance that falls slightly faster. If the lender you choose bills monthly, setting aside half the payment from each paycheck gives a similar budgeting effect. Some lenders allow you to pick a due date close to when your paycheck lands, which the enable loans application lets you note through your pay frequency.

06

What an enable loans estimate leaves out

The calculator assumes a personal loan with a fixed APR, equal payments made on time and no added charges. Real personal loan offers can differ because of fees, payment timing, rounding and the lender's own interest method.

  • Origination fees that reduce the amount deposited, unless you have already folded them into the APR you entered.
  • Late and returned-payment fees, which apply only if a payment is missed or bounces.
  • Daily interest accrual: many lenders charge simple interest by the day, so paying a few days early or late shifts the split slightly.
  • The first payment date: a longer or shorter first period changes the interest in the first installment.
  • Your actual approval: the estimate says nothing about whether a lender will make an offer, or for how much.

Treat the result as a planning range. When an offer arrives, its Truth in Lending disclosure shows the exact APR, finance charge and payment schedule; compare those figures to your estimate. You can read more on the enable loans website about what lenders usually require before an offer is made.

FAQ

Questions about this page

Why does the calculator start at 21.49% APR?

21.49% is the example APR used across this site for illustration. It falls inside the typical range of about 6% to 35.99% for personal loans of this size. Change it to any figure a lender quotes you for a closer estimate.

Can the calculator tell me whether I will be approved?

No. It only does the payment math. Approval of a personal loan, the amount offered, the APR and the term are decided by each lender after reviewing your credit, income and other details.

Why is my lender's payment a few cents different from the estimate?

Lenders may accrue interest daily, set a longer or shorter first period, or round each payment differently. Those small differences add up to a few cents or dollars. The figures in your Truth in Lending disclosure are the ones that count.
